Abstract

This study aims to examine the coping strategies of trainee counselors at one of the Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) in Perak. This study has used a quantitative method through simple random sampling involving a total of 92 Bachelor of Counseling students at Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah (Semester 7 Session I 2022/2023) as study respondents. The instrument used to obtain data was through the Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI) questionnaire and the study data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0 software. The results of the descriptive analysis study show that trainee counselors have the highest coping strategies in terms of problem solving (64.1%) and the lowest in terms of emotional expression factors and avoiding problems which is 8.7%. This finding explains that trainee counselors are wise to take action in choosing the appropriate coping strategies to solve problems in order to overcome emotional stress experienced. Meanwhile, trainee counselors are less involved in emotional expression and do not avoid problems in the situation of emotional stress.
