Abstract

Prayer is the pillar of the religion of Islam and is the key to divine reward and entry to heaven. The obligation of certain prayers on Muslims occurred after the obligation of qiyam al-layl (night prayers) based on the Qur'an in surah al-Muzammil, in the first two verses. This liability started to be lessened progressively with the obligatory prayers starting with 50 times to just 5 in the events of Isra‘ and Mi’raj. However, the practice of this obligatory prayers seems to be less satisfactory especially among teenagers as statistics show that as many as 80% of Muslim teenagers in primary and secondary schools in Malaysia still do not fulfill the prayers. Therefore, this study aims to identify the relationship between the level of understanding and the practice of obligatory prayers among the students of Sultan Azlan Shah University (USAS). Quantitative framework is adapted in this study as a research design with a survey method which used questionnaire as its instrument. Purposive sampling equates to a total of 75 respondents from the total population in this study. Documents, books, working papers, journal articles, databases and so on were also purposed as supporting research data. SPSS software was used for analyzing the data with descriptive statistics to draw conclusions based on the numerical data. The results show that the learning outcomes of the Fiqh al-Ibadat course (SYI4063M), studied by USAS students at the beginning of the semester are at a high level of understanding, especially in the topic of obligatory prayers. The mean reading obtained was at 4.73 with a standard deviation of 0.29. However, the level of practice isn’t parallel at the level of scale analysis as the mean reading is only at a low level of 2.95 with a standard deviation reading of 0.27.
