Abstract

Adversity Quotient or AQ is a measure of intelligence to face the challenges for an individual. The inconsistencies on previous research of relationship between AQ with academic performance had raised questions about the role of AQ as a substance for potential technical stream students in facing the challenges of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (4IR). Therefore, this article seeks to examine the relationships between AQ with academic achievement among students. The study was carried out using a quantitative survey design. A total of 1,845 students from five polytechnics were selected using proportionate stratified multistage cluster sampling. The IKBAR instrument was used to measure AQ by emphasising the four constructs namely Control, Ownership, Reach, and Endurance. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics for Pearson correlation. The findings showed a high level of AQ for all constructs as well as found a very weak and significant positive relationship between all AQ constructs with academic performance. The results of the study have implicated the theory through the need to redefine aspects of student performance. It should not focus on academic achievement only, but need to be expanding to other achievements in their lives. Additionally, stakeholders can also take the initiative towards providing strategic plans in strengthening the resilience for polytechnic students who will spearhead the country’s industrial success.
