Abstract

Motivation is one of the driving factors of individual behavior in reading activities. The literature reviews indicate that the effectiveness of reading activities very much relies on reinforcements and stimuli from internal (intrinsic) and external (extrinsic) factors. However, the level of awareness on the role and importance of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations in enhancing the reading skils and understanding of Arabic as a Second Language texts is still low. Acknowledging this, the study aims to identify and describe the levels and types of motivation in reading Arabic texts among students in the religious secondary school in Malaysia. A survey was conducted involving 506 participants selected by random group sampling method. The data were collected using questionnaire and analyzed descriptively. The results show that the overall level of motivation to read Arabic texts among students is high (mean=3.69). Students are more motivated extrinsicly rather than intrinsicly. The results also indicate that all dimensions of extrinsic motivation, such as grade, recognition, competition and compliance attain a high level of mean in comparison to intrinsic motivation, which achieves a moderate mean level. The implication of this study explicates that identification of students’ levels and types of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation should be utilized as a catalyst in the planning and enhancement of teaching and learning activities to help boost students’ self-efficacy and thereby potentially achieving excellence.
