Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the paradigms which act as the basis of construction for existing development indices. There are several development indices available to measure the level of development in the world. Each development index is constructed based on a development paradigm. The question is, what are the paradigms used in constructing these indices? How did this paradigm influence the selection of indicators in these indices? This paper aspires to provide answers to these two questions by selecting and analyzing three types of conventional indices which are the economic development index (IPE), the social development index (IPS) and the sustainable development index (IPL). As such the focus of discussions is divided into three sections. First, it examines the importance of the development paradigms in the development indices. Second, it is to analyse the development paradigms in selected development indices and third, it is to formulate a paradigm for Islamicbased development index (PBI). Finally, this paper intends to conclude that Islamic-based development index could not be constructed based on the paradigms of the conventional development indices. The PBI Index needs to be constructed based on the Islamic tasawur. A development index could not be regarded as a PBI index if it is not constructed on the paradigm of Islamic tasawur.
