Abstract

Ḥadīth criticism flourished in the Islamic world since the first century of hijra and remains a compelling characteristic of Muslim cultural life today. One of of the most prolific ḥadīth scholar Ibn Ḥibbān al-Bustī is credited with Kitāb al-Thiqāt, where it has been one of the most valuable sources for the study of the first three centuries of ḥadīth transmitter criticism and a record of medieval Islamic history, and even of non-ḥadīth transmission. This article discusses the use of methodology of ḥadīth criticism and chronological framework in evaluating the prophetic textual heritage and to cluster generation of people from the same time period (ṭabaqāt). By employing two case studies and content analysis, an attempt is made to describe Ibn Ḥibbān’s approach on sīra of the Prophet, in order to arrive at some general considerations on the relation of ḥadīth studies and historiography. The finding shows that the historiographical approach through the methodology of ḥadīth criticism is borne out of the interaction between Ibn Ḥibbān and the sīra corpora, and this is a deeply personal action; it is a reflection of the self that incorporates a number of different elements: what Ibn Ḥibbān has read, his methodology, ideological leanings, aspiration in writing the Kitāb al- Thiqāt, and so on. The overall output of his works, its purpose is to enable one to figure out the expression of a different and unique description of Prophet’s life story.
