The purpose of this paper is to analyze Muhammad Abdullah Deraz's criticism of Islamic traditional approaches, as well as Western approaches to ethics. It analyses his criticism of various moral theses, as well as his lack the holistic perspective towards ethics. In insistence that available approaches were only partial in their treatment of ethics and that they relation to the Qur'anic holistic understanding and conceptualization of ethics, existing approaches lacked theoretical depth and competing approach, Deraz believes that his is a more comprehensive one.
